I have been working on low light color imaging (color night vision) for a while. My initial testing used around $35,000 in night vision tubes, specialized filters, and machine vision cameras. However by hacking an off the shelf camera, it is amazing what you can achieve.
The video sample here compares a standard Canon 5D Mark II shooting video at its maximum ISO (light sensitivity) of 25,600 with the brightest lens (f1.2) that you can get to the same system with the max ISO pushed to 1,600,000 via custom firmware I cobbled together based on the open source Magic Lantern firmware. Some day soon I plan to try this with much more capable 5D Mark III.
